Here are my 2019 finishes, in chronological order.
PQ10.1 - Hope Pillow
I've dabbled with Kim Lapacek's Project Quilting for years only ever completing one project prior to this year. With quite a few projects floating in my head and looking for a challenge, I decided this year, Season 10, would be my year. The first challenge was Hope Springs Eternal. I made and submitted this pillow cover using scraps from one of my Modern Quilt Guild MiniQuilt Swap drafts and some vintage rickrack. Read More ...
PQ10.2 - Red, White, and Blue
The second Project Quilting Season 10 Challenge was Red, White, and Blue. I was excited for this week as I had two weekends with plenty of time to stitch and Monday off of work for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. I thought I would be able to tackle a "big" project. The result was "Fractured Star". This quilt, an improv piece with reds, white and blues, has actually been in my head for quite awhile. I have a wonderful stash of solid scraps, many of which are upcycled clothing pieces, I originally purchased at a garage sale a few years ago (a big garbage bag - almost fifteen pounds - for $3). In addition to Project Quilting, some of this quilt was pieced in response to improv prompts from Amy Ellis from Amy's Creative Side through A Week of Improv. Finally, it will be my entry in the Omaha Modern Quilt Guild's Solids Challenge due March of 2019. Read More ...
The Modern Quilt Guild MiniQuilt Swap
My partner for the 2019 Modern Quilt Guild MiniQuilt Swap is an accomplished quilter whose work I've long-admired. She has used Piet Mondrian as an influence in many pieces. I chose to use the works of another Bauhaus painter, Josef Albers, as my inspiration. The piece I made is on the left. The piece Katherine Dossman sent me is on the right. Read More ...
PQ10.3 - Bigger than a Breadbox
This challenge came at exactly the wrong time. I knew I would be traveling to San Antonio for work for most of the week. A small, simple project was in my head. Then the challenge with a bigger size requirement came out. So much for planning ahead! Shwin and Shwin's Hipster Cat was a quick appliqué that used some of the fabric I found in Texas! Read More ...
Joy!
The Omaha Modern Quilt Guild hosted a challenge in 2018 for members to make quilts that expressed Joy. In addition to quilting, learning is one of my favorite things to do. For the last six to eight months, I've been a part of the Quilting Army supporting Professor Elizabeth Townsend Gard from Tulane Law School in her work to study the intellectual property issues in quilting. Around the same time as the Joy Challenge, Dr. Townsend Gard asked for quilts in the Just Wanna Quilt logo colors to be a part of the program's booth at Houston Quilt Market and Festival. Because the Just Wanna Quilt project has been a source of learning for me this year, I decided to combine the projects. Read more ...
PQ10.4 - Pixel Play
This challenge came on another week with travel for work that limited my quilting time. After working at the Nebraska Asphalt Paving Conference, a traffic cone on a darker, asphalt-like background seemed p be well received. Read More ....
Sandia: a quilt for my couch
One of the goals I had in 2018 was to make at least one quilt for the sole purpose of living on our couch for nights watching tv, fort building, slumber parties, and all of those things that quilts are great for. When I saw the Sandia Quilt from Southwest Modern: From Marfa to New Mexico: 18 Travel-Inspired Quilts by Kristi Schroeder from Initial K Studio, I knew this would be one of these quilts.
